breaking up sound with VLC 3,0,11

Beitrag von Henk Tulp »

I got this message from an AV club in the UK:

"We are currently receiving entries for the IAC Peter Coles International &
have found that MP4's made with M.Objects, when playing using the latest VLC
Player 3.0.11 the sound breaks up.

They play fine in an earlier version VLC 3.0.8 which I have on my desktop.

On John's desktop using the latest VLC the sound breaks up.
The same file plays OK in Windows Media Player & also in PTE.

Marion Waine has also had the same problem on her laptop, but she says it
plays on her iMac.

As well as 3 entries for the competition we also tried your two sequences
'Nikkei' & 'I Have But Two Priorities' and the same thing happens.
The sound breaks up in VLC 3.0.11 but plays OK in VLC 3.0.8

We have contacted VLC to give them details of the problem & they have asked
if we know the Audio Codec that was used."

Does anyone knows about this problem?

Hello Henk,

since MP4 is only a container for video and audio, it is quite important (mandatory!) for analysis to have the information about the codec which is used for the embedded video and audio streams. You have to analyze this with available tools. Free is for example Gspot or MediaInfo, but also with VLC you can have a look on the stream properties. VLC menu -> Tools -> Codec Information -> Codec. Only with this information published, we (the other mobjects users) could try to reproduce any effects.

I personally had never any issues with Mobjects and MP4 files exported from mobjects.
I am coding audio with MPEG AAC, 44,1 or 48 kHz, 32 bits/sample, mp4a.
With MP4 imports in Mobjects there are issues from time to time, but that is another topic and mainly due to the origin of MP4s.

Hello, Henk,

Rudy already mentioned possible problems regarding the used codecs in these MP4-files.

Another possible problem can be the use of hardware acceleration within VLC.
Sometimes this does not work properly (depends on the hardware, drivers and settings used).

So at first I would deactivate the hardware acceleration in VLC, if activated (what the normal setting is) and try the failing video again.
